Antonio was born in Malaga, Spain in 1960. He studied at the School of Dramatic
Art. His dream of becoming a professional soccer player was shattered
after his broke his foot at the age of fourteen. His first taste of acting
was with an independant theatre group who traveled and toured all of Spain.
Continuing to act in Spain, Banderas moved to Madrid in 1981 after being
recruted by the National Theatre of Spain. There he filmed 'Tie Me Up!
Tie Me Down', for his performance he recieved a very prestigious award
for best actor.
Banderas made his American film debut in the 'Mambo Kings' In 1992. At the time of this movie Antonio knew very little
english, and had to phonetically learn all of his lines. Soon after he
entered a 8 hour a day total immersion program giving him a crash course
of the language to the point he spoke it fluently. His breakthrough role
into the American fim industry was for his part in 'Philadelphia.' Here
he played the gay lover of Tom Hanks. This role led to him getting a part in 'Interview With A Vampire ' in 1995..
He was married for 8 years to actress Ana Leza
, but is currently married to actress Melanie Griffith. Antonio
and Melanie have one child of their own named Estella, and two children
from Melanie's previous marriages, Alexander and Dakota.
He has starred in a number of major motion pictures including Desperado'(1995),
'Evita'(1998), and the smash hit 'The Mask of Zorro'(1998). Recently,
Antonio has starred in 'Play it to The Bone,' and 'The 13th Warrior.'
